CONSIDER YOUR CLIENT

Who's Listening to You?

Sometimes your employees are your audience! The CONSTRAINED version of the memo from a regional sales manager to area sales managers is formal and stilted, whereas the CONGENIAL version gives some good news before the bad and offers a team problem-solving approach.

CONSTRAINED

CONGENIAL

Enclosed herewith are the final sales totals for the quarter ending in December. It is my unfortunate duty to inform you that the figures are such that reductions in the total number of retail units may be indicated. A planning meeting for all sales personnel will be scheduled for the near future and these figures will be discussed. Thanking you in advance for your cooperation, I admire the hard work of each one of you! But as you can see in the attached chart, final sales totals have not matched your efforts. Let's talk about our retail units Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. in my office. I value your insight.

Readers, send your own examples of CONSTRAINED and CONGENIAL for recognition in this space..
